National Secondary Professional Liability Insurance Program
Posted: August 27, 2007

As professionals, engineers take responsibility for their work. If their work subsequently fails they may be held liable (personally) for any resulting costs or damages. Unless they have ample professional liability insurance they may be forced to pay thousands of dollars in damages and legal fees from their own pockets.

Many engineers have insurance coverage, either through their employers or their own policies, to cover such risks. This is especially true for those engineers in the consulting field. On the other hand , many employed engineers in fields other than consulting do not always appreciate the need for coverage distinct from that provided by their employer under, say, a general liability policy. There are many situations where these engineers need to call upon additional professional liability insurance.

At a meeting in February, 2000, the Executive Directors of the Provincial and Territorial Professional Engineering Associations/Ordre, known collectively as the Staff Liaison Group (SLG), discussed the possibility of establishing a national secondary professional liability insurance program to cover the individual members of the above associations. At the request of the SLG the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers took on the coordinating role in obtaining competitive proposals for and implementing such a program and, thereafter, in managing the program. The SLG was identified as the overseeing body for the program.

In due course all the details were settled to the satisfaction of the ten out of twelve constituent members of CCPE that had agree to participate in the program and the National Professional Secondary Liability Insurance Program was inaugurated on March 31, 2002. In 2004 one further constituent member joined the program.

It is a requirement of this insurance that all the members and engineers-in-training of the participating associations/ordre be enlisted in the program.

The Master Policy which follows sets out the terms and conditions of the insurance and the appended Questions and Answers section provides straightforward answers to frequently asked questions. A toll free number is provided for those who have additional questions.
